Here's a tip to try if one day you discover that your router becomes unable to connect to your cable modem to the Internet.
- Turn off all your devices. Disconnect the network cable that connects your router to your cable modem.
- Connect a network cable from your computer directly into your cable modem. Turn on the power of your cable modem, followed by your computer. Check that the computer is able to connect to the Internet (i.e. you can access an internet website via your web browser).
- If you are able to connect to the Internet with this direct connection, then proceed with the following steps.
- Turn off all your devices. Re-connect your computer to your router to the cable modem.
- Turn on the power for your cable modem, followed by your router, followed by your computer (the same computer that successfully connected to the Internet via direct connection to the cable modem). Allow 30 seconds between each device power on.
- Use your computer's web browser to login to your router's admin page. Look for a setting that allows you to clone the MAC address of your computer.
- Enable the setting to activate the router to clone the MAC address of your computer that successfully connected to the Internet via direct computer-to-cable modem connection.
- Save the setting and reboot the router if necessary. You should be able to achieve connectivity to the Internet via your router after this.
